What Is Involved When It Comes to Hardwood Floor Installation?
With hardwood floors being capable of lasting over 100 years, is it any wonder why so many people are choosing to perform a hardwood floor installation in their homes. However, installing such floors is quite a meticulous job which call for excellent carpentry skills. Not only are these floors extremely durable, but they are absolutely stunning also. When considering installing these floors, it is vital that you understand everything involved, which is why we at Gomez Remodeling decided to write this blog.
Before installation, you first need to inspect the site where the floors are going to be placed. Whether it is new construction or a remodel, the area must be structurally sound, level and free from any squeaks or other issues from the sub-floor. Plus, the area must be cooled or heated to the average room temperature and humidity. Failure to do this will result in more expansion and contraction in the wood, that will cause poor installation. And, you will need to acclimate the wood to its surroundings for at least 72 hours before the installation occurs.
When the hardwood is going to be installed over a concrete slab in a basement, for example, you may have to seal the floor beforehand. Doing this will stop any moisture from the sub-floor from reaching the hardwood. Also, it is not necessary to remove any baseboards before installing these floors, however, it does give a newer look on older homes.
Once the sub-floor is prepped, you then need to prep door jambs and the hardwood planks. Your door jambs need to be cut around 1/16 of an inch above the new floor. You need to do this carefully, and remember to open a few of your hardwood flooring boxes as they may be slightly different shades, in order to mix them better.
